take charge of the business here. Both Mr. Heermann and Mr.
Penning state the latter returned to the Colony the day after
the pledge was signed, vis August 12th. The Kashima Maru" however
arrived on August 11th and there is the copy of a letter signed
by Mr. Penning to the Colonial Secretary advising his arrival
dated the 12th - the date of the document signed in question.
On the 7th August Mr. Heermann, for himself and firm,
executed a Power of Attorney in favour of Mr. Penning and E. Frohlich
to enable them to carry on the business on the ground of his
Sudden departure from the Colony.
Mr. Penning states he was taken and introduced to the Bank
on his arrival and Mr. Hynes thereupen informed him the Bank would
appoint him Kanager of Messrs Cha, J. Gaupp à Co's business. The
letter of appointment as Manager was sent to Mr. Panning ọn 15th
August. It is interesting to note that Mr. F. Heermann signed a letter
to the Bank on the 14th August asking permission to draw certain sume
from the Bank. Hr. F. Heermann informed us there was no attempt
made by the Bank to take possession or notice given to the Landlords
other than the deposit of the loose diamonds and the appointment
of Mr. Penning as Manager.
As a matter of fact Mr. Heermann did not leave the Colony,
although, we understand, he had permission to do so and eventually
he was interned in Hongkong as a prisoner of War towards the end
of October 1914.
